Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design(github.com)

tl;dr: DEsk is a Wayland desktop environment for Linux that renders the UI as a skeuomorphic walnut desk, where windows are sheets of paper, the dock is a drawer, apps live in binders on a bookshelf, and the room is ray-traced on the GPU (with a CPU fallback). It bundles existing free software (Xfce Terminal, Thunar, Firefox, NetworkManager, etc.) rather than reinventing them, and ships installers for Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, and Fedora. The project is in beta (v0.1.2), MIT-licensed, and was largely coded by Claude under the author's direction.
HN Discussion:
  • ↑Appreciates the project for enabling spatial memory and reviving tactile/chunky computing feel
  • ↑Welcomes variety and experimentation in desktop design versus bland modern aesthetics
  • ↑Nostalgic for skeuomorphic design era and happy to see its return
  • ↓Skeptical this is real skeuomorphism and hopes it doesn't become a UI trend
  • ↓Critiques execution details like AI-generated README prose and ray-tracing versus baked textures
