Hijacking the PS5's RTMP stream(yashgarg.dev)

tl;dr: The author bypassed the PS5's streaming restrictions by using dnsmasq to spoof Twitch's ingest domains, redirecting the console's RTMP broadcast to a local nginx-rtmp server on their Mac. The key trick was targeting `contribute.live-video.net` subdomains, which use plain RTMP (port 1935) rather than RTMPS, avoiding certificate validation issues. The captured stream can then be piped into mpv, OBS, or Discord — replacing the need for a capture card.
HN Discussion:
  • ↑Security concern about unencrypted RTMP streaming in modern consoles
  • ↑Historical context noting others (Lightstream) used similar MITM techniques before official solutions
  • ~Confusion about technical details, specifically the RTMPS vs RTMP discrepancy
  • ↑Appreciation for the clever hack enabling desired use cases like Discord sharing
  • •Tangential ideas about extending the approach (cloud gaming, Bluetooth peripherals, HDMI capture alternatives)
